Individual Competition
The Onsite Cake Decorating competition provides an individual student with the opportunity to showcase his/her culinary artistic talents and creative abilities. The student will be responsible for bringing materials to create the cake design(s). This competition is designed to encourage creativity, and innovation, and reward culinary artistic talent. A club may have only one entry for Onsite Cake Decorating. For senior, a club may enter a student in both Division I and Division II. A student may use an electronic device during the competition for inspiration.

Cake Decorating Guidelines
- No materials will be provided. The artist is responsible for bringing a tote that is limited to the following items: all pre-made icing (in bags, tubs, or tubes) ready to use, decorating tips, ten toothpicks, couplers, maximum of three round cake dummies (plastic or styrofoam) no larger than 9”, spatula, smoother (no knives), safety scissors, paintbrush (any size), cake turntable, roll of paper towels, wipes, and cake cardboard base. Each artist is required to bring a drop cloth/plastic tablecloth for both the table and floor and a trash bag for disposal of submission.
- The cake decorative surface must be clean and clear of marks, designs, etc. The coordinator will check prior to the competition starting.
- Fondant may not be used.
- No stencils.
- Stationary cake stands are prohibited. Only cake turntables/revolving cake stands are permissible.
- A student is allowed to use a maximum of three round cake dummies (plastic or styrofoam) no larger than 9" for layering. The three round cake dummies must remain intact. They cannot be altered, cut or shaped into a different form. The finished product cannot exceed 12” wide x 15” tall including the cake turntable.
- No pre-assembly of cake dummies prior to the competition.
- All decorations for the cake need to be made onsite using the icing. All icing, inside of containers are piping bags, must be premade and colored in advance. Creativity in color is encouraged.
- A student will have 1 hour to complete the onsite cake decorating entry.
- Each entry will be judged holistically by a panel of judges.
- Decorating of the cake should reflect the National Beta Convention Theme - Wired for Success. Participants must incorporate Beta elements on the cake (i.e. symbols, items, any of the four pillars, words, etc. pertaining to National Beta) in addition to the theme.

Judging Criteria
- Holistic style judging will be used to determine the winners in the competition. Judges will use the following to determine the winners:
- Creativity – originality, innovation, coloring
- Technique - application and experimentation of medium, texture
- Primary visual impact - subject matter based on convention theme
- Presentation – appearance, overall artistic appeal
- Complexity - degree of difficulty in overall design and appearance.
